In early 2019, artist Alexander James Hamilton opened a studio in a disused photographic paper factory located in Siberia that had been closed since the 1970's and called it 'Dark Vat'.
Central to the vast space a 120 square metre black water reflection pool was installed, surrounded by vaulted 5 metre black velvet walls. Classically trained ballet dancers were invited to interpret the Dark Vat in an intimate series of performances. The camera never looking directly at the dancers movement, just that of their reflections, shifting and ephemeral.

Within the space the artist hosted a residency where 15 local artists were invited to collaborate and exhibit together. The project included design workshops for plastic recycling, poetry recitals, project screenings and artist talks. These together with the public exhibition were all heavily over subscribed with people queuing before opening each day of the public exhibition, attended by over 3,000 people in just 6 day
This short documentary film takes you around the space and proceses within by Elizaveta Stefankina
